Safety, analytics and operations expertise for high‑consequence work.

The Avian Group is a technical consulting firm founded by two airline safety professionals. We help organizations build safety management systems that hold up to regulators, turn safety data into decisions leaders can act on, and keep operations steady when conditions are not.

18+ years

Combined in FAA Part 121 airline safety leadership and analytics

Regulatory

Experience working with regulatory agencies to get programs approved and accepted

IOSA

Experience bringing safety management systems into compliance with IOSA standards

Executive

Familiar with briefing C-level executives and operational leadership

What we do

Three disciplines, applied together

Most safety problems are also data problems and operations problems. We work across all three so a fix in one area does not create a gap in another.

Safety

Safety management systems that work in daily practice, not only on paper.

  • 14 CFR Part 5 SMS consulting: gap analysis, implementation and FAA acceptance
  • Airport SMS for Part 139 certificated airports
  • Safety manuals and program documentation prepared for regulatory acceptance
  • Investigations and root cause analysis using HFACS, Threat and Error Management and fishbone methods
  • Safety assurance programs: ASAP, FOQA, LOSA and Continuous LOSA
  • Continuing Analysis and Surveillance System (CASS) programs
  • Crew fatigue risk management
  • Emergency response planning

Analytics

Safety data that is trustworthy, connected and read by the people who make decisions.

  • Analysis of large qualitative and quantitative datasets, from free-text safety reports to operational data
  • AI-assisted classification and automatic de-identification of safety reports
  • Safety data governance, validation rules and quality controls
  • Safety performance indicators and risk aggregation models
  • Data visualization with Power BI and Tableau
  • SQL, Python, GitHub and data engineering
  • Data migration and integration between safety systems
  • CASS metrics, trend analysis and continuous monitoring

Operations

Practical support that keeps compliance, systems and people aligned.

  • Regulatory compliance support for FAA 14 CFR Part 121 and OSHA requirements
  • Audit readiness, including IOSA
  • Safety platform selection and configuration
  • AI-assisted Safety Risk Management (SRM) processes
  • Automated SRM interface notifications between departments
  • Workflow automation with Power Automate and REST APIs
  • Corrective action follow-through and cross-department risk controls

Where we work

Air, land and sea

Our track record is in commercial aviation. The disciplines behind it, including hazard identification, risk assessment, safety assurance and data governance, carry into other high-consequence environments. In rail and marine we are not industry specialists, but the regulatory, human-factors and safety-data challenges are closely related, and we bring that experience to the table.

Aerospace

Design and production approval holders bringing in SMS under the expanded 14 CFR Part 5 rule, plus risk, assurance and data programs for maintenance organizations.

Aviation

Airlines, charter and air tour operators under Parts 121, 135 and 91.147, from Part 5 SMS implementation and FAA acceptance to IOSA.

Airports

Part 139 certificated airports implementing SMS under the FAA airport SMS rule: gap analysis, safety risk management, safety assurance and safety data.

Unmanned Aircraft

Drone and unmanned aircraft operators, from Part 107 waivers to Part 135 certification: operational risk assessments, SMS development and safety data programs.

Occupational Safety

Workplace hazard analysis, OSHA-aligned safety programs and incident investigation.

Rail

Safety management, fatigue risk, human factors and safety data programs for rail operators, built on transferable aviation experience.

Marine

Safety management, operational risk and data programs for vessel and port operations, built on transferable aviation experience.

How we work

From finding to lasting fix

Assess

We start with your documents, your data and the people doing the work, and map where risk controls are proven and where they are assumed.

Analyze

We structure and validate the data, quantify hazards and exposure, and separate real trends from noise.

Implement

We build the processes, tools and documentation alongside your team, so they own the result.

Sustain

We put the metrics, reviews and handoffs in place that keep improvements working after the engagement ends.

About us

The Eagle and the Penguin

The Avian Group takes its identity from its co-founders’ nicknames. The eagle stands for altitude, oversight and precision; the penguin for adaptation, resilience and steady performance in demanding environments. Together they span air, land and sea.
